If you have missing or damaged teeth, we may recommend that you have a bridge or crown put in place to repair your smile. A bridge or crown may also maintain your bite and prevent the development of further problems with your teeth. At Oasis Smiles, Dr. Sasha Bhor provides family and cosmetic dental services to patients in the San Diego area. Dr. Bhor supports you in the process of getting a crown or bridge with compassionate care and a dedication to maximizing your comfort.
Reasons you may need a crown
A crown covers or “caps” one of your teeth. Crowns can strengthen damaged teeth. They’re also used for cosmetic reasons, to improve the appearance, shape, or alignment of any problem teeth in your smile.
You might need a crown if:
- We need to repair a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining
- You have a weak tooth that runs the risk of fracturing
- One of your teeth has fractured
- One of your teeth has had a root canal treatment
- We need to attach a bridge
- We need to cover a dental implant
- You want to cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
We'll match the color of your crown to the shade of your natural teeth for a seamless appearance. Crowns can be made of porcelain, ceramic, and acrylic, as well as gold and metal alloys, which are sometimes recommended for back teeth where strong materials are most important.
Reasons you may need a bridge
We'll use a bridge to repair the gap in your smile if you're missing one or more teeth.
There are several parts of a dental bridge:
- The two natural teeth (or implants) on either side of the gap, which are known as abutments
- A replacement tooth, called a pontic, that can be made of porcelain or ceramic, and is similar to a crown
Dental bridges can be fixed, resin-bonded, or cantilevered. Dr. Bhor can explain the differences and let you know which type of bridge is right for you. A bridge will help correct issues with your bite due to missing teeth and help prevent any drifting in your alignment around gaps.
Repair your smile with a crown or bridge
You don’t need to worry about your crown or bridge slipping out of place because we cement them onto your existing teeth or implants, so they'll only be removable by a dentist. Before we fit you with a crown or bridge, we reduce your existing teeth in size to allow a good fit, and take an impression to create an exact mold.
Getting a crown or bridge is usually a two-appointment procedure. We’ll provide you with anesthetic or sedation, as needed, to give you a pain-free experience.
Both crowns and bridges can last a lifetime if supported by good oral hygiene and regular checkups. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Bhor to discuss any dental procedures you may need, call our office or request an appointment online.
