How to Extend the Results of Teeth Whitening

A gleaming smile with perfect white teeth is part of the American dream, right? Unfortunately, many of us struggle with the “perfect white teeth” part of that vision, but with professional teeth whitening services, we can still achieve our dream.

Most dentists offer teeth whitening services that remove stains or discoloration from your teeth and leave them a brilliant, gleaming white. This is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it’s quick, easy, effective, and relatively affordable.

You don’t want to continually be visiting the dentist’s office for whitening treatments, though, so how can you extend the results of that amazing treatment you just had?

Dr. Sasha Bhor at Oasis Smiles in Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, California, is here to save the day with a few tips. To help your teeth whitening treatment last longer, try the following:

Good habits to extend whitening results

Avoid foods and drinks that stain. This is one of the biggest things you can do to keep your teeth white — try to avoid pigment-rich foods and drinks that cause stains on your teeth. Some of the worst offenders are coffee, red wine, and black tea, along with foods such as blackberries, blueberries, and tomato sauce. You don’t have to give these up entirely, but modify your usage — drink your soft drink through a straw, for instance, or add milk to your coffee.

Brush regularly. You should brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth clean and healthy. You should also brush immediately after eating a food that has the potential to stain your teeth. Use a soft bristle brush to avoid damaging your teeth.

Practice good oral hygiene. In addition to brushing, you should floss at least once a day and use an antiseptic mouthwash once a day as well. You could also consider using a whitening toothpaste when you brush.

Schedule regular dental appointments. Those twice-a-year cleanings we recommend aren’t just for show. Regular cleanings by our hygienist can brighten up your teeth and remove any stains that may be starting to form since you had your teeth whitened.

Don’t smoke. If you were a smoker in the past, teeth whitening is a great way to remove nicotine stains. If you don’t want the stains to come back, don’t start smoking again — it won’t take long for your teeth to look yellowed again.

If you’re ready to take the plunge into teeth whitening, Dr. Bhor and our expert team at Oasis Smiles in San Diego are ready to assist you by giving you a highly effective, customized whitening treatment that can last up to a year or longer if you follow the tips above.
