Bridges Q & A

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a partial denture that fills a toothless gap between your natural teeth. Constructed of gold, metal, alloys, or porcelain, they are strong, durable, and look just like your teeth.

What are the benefits of a bridge?

The advantages of a bridge go far beyond appearance. Besides solving problems with chewing food or speaking, it will prevent your natural teeth from shifting into the wrong position. It can also restore the shape of your face.

What kinds of bridges are available?

At Oasis Smiles, Dr. Bhor specializes in “fixed bridges,” artificial tooth structures that she permanently places in your mouth. Once she sets the bridge, you’ll notice very little difference between it and your natural teeth.

How is a bridge created and inserted?

Building your new bridge is a three-step process.

First, Dr. Bhor contours two healthy teeth on either side of the gap, creating foundational structures called abutments.

Second, Dr. Bhor makes a mold of your mouth. This is sent to a dental lab and used to create your fixed bridge. Before you leave, Dr. Bhor fits you with a temporary bridge to wear while waiting for your permanent bridge.

Third and finally, when your bridge arrives, you return for fitting and installation. The structure has two crowns that Dr. Bhor adheres to the abutments. In between are the pontics: The artificial teeth that fill the gap.

How do I care for my bridge?

After Dr. Bhor installs your fixed bridge, you should eat soft foods for a few days while the adhesive sets the structure firmly in place. After that, you can eat normally. Your bridge will feel just like your natural teeth.

To maintain your beautiful new smile, you must practice excellent oral hygiene. The integrity of your bridge relies on the health of the teeth where it was mounted.

Plaque deposits can cause tooth decay and gum disease, so regular brushing and flossing are essential. However, with proper care and hygiene, your bridge can last for five to 15 years and longer.
