Dental Crowns Q & A

by Sasha Bhor, DDS

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cover placed over a tooth that helps restore its shape, appearance, and strength. Dr. Bhor may recommend a crown to:

  • Reinforce teeth with large fillings
  • Mount and secure a dental bridge
  • Cap a dental implant
  • Cover discolored or misshapen teeth

What kinds of dental crowns are available?

Crowns are made from a variety of materials, including ceramics, composite resins, metal alloys, and porcelain.

For porcelain crowns, Oasis Smiles offers Cerec® CAD/CAM, an exciting technology that creates a high-quality crown during your appointment. There's no need for a temporary crown or additional office visits.

When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Bhor will explore each option and help you select the best crown for your dental needs and budget.

How is a dental crown inserted?

First, Dr. Bhor administers a local anesthetic and reshapes your tooth by filing the enamel.

If you have chosen a CEREC crown, the doctor uses digital radiography to make a three-dimensional image of your mouth. Dr. Bhor uses it this technology to manufacture your porcelain crown on the spot. Usually, it is ready for placement within two hours.

Conventional crowns have more steps and an additional visit. After shaping your tooth, Dr. Bhor makes a mold of your mouth that she sends to a dental lab. Before you leave, she places a temporary crown you’ll wear while your permanent crown is manufactured.

When your new crown arrives in about two to three weeks, Dr. Bhor removes the temporary crown and cements your permanent one in place.

How do I care for my dental crown?

You should continue to brush and floss as usual, and see Dr. Bhor for regular checkups and cleanings. Additionally, you should avoid chewing hard substances like ice or pencils.

Whether you choose a same-day or conventional crown, your new tooth is very durable. With proper care and oral hygiene, it should last for 10 to 15 years.
